Haldeman PotteryHaldeman Pottery was founded by Virgil and Anna Haldeman in Burbank in 1933. Previously Virgil had worked at a Pennsylvania tile plant and for Catalina Clay Products, specializing in glaze chemistry. The Haldemans sold their pottery under the Caliente trade-name...mostly vases, low flower bowls, flower frogs and figurines.Caliente pottery featured some of the most beautiful glazes of any California potter, including high-gloss turquoise, burnt orange, yellow, maroon, jade green, chartreuse and more. The company experienced much success during the 1940s, adding figurines, candle holders, ashtrays and planters to the line. Also produced was a very popular series of Art Deco dancing ladies. The Burbank factory was sold in 1947 and production moved to Calabasas. Caliente ware was produced for six more years before the company closed in 1953. |
