Some
of the most highly sought Metlox pieces are the work of sculptor Carl Romanelli
who was hired by Metlox in the late 30's. Carl Romanelli was born and raised
in Los Angeles and a seventh generation sculptor. After being trained by
his father, he executed the "Helmsman," a statue now located in Marina de
Rey, but formerly across the street from the Helms Bakery in Culver City.
Other works of his can be seen at St. Michael's Church at Manchester and
Vermont, St. Vincent de Paul at Figueroa and Adams, and Temple Shaarei Tikvah
in Arcadia.
Carl Romanelli's first work for Metlox was the
Metlox Minature line of small-scale animal figurines. Later came his popular
designs of the Modern Masterpieces line. They were figures, figural vases,
busts, wall pockets, bookends, and vases with figures in relief. Most of
these pieces had his signature of "C. Romanelli" in the mold and many of
his designs were patented.
